Long ago, and far away
A girl named Shadow mourned
The house had burned and from the ash
She wakened, dark and horned
Poor Shadow knew not how to speak
Nor how to play or frolic
Her eyes did glow from flesh of coal
A child so melancholic
Her form did shift like darkened mist
Her dress was short and pretty
She longed to walk beside the rest
For she was sharp and witty
From high above she watched them play
She learned their every move
She sulked they wouldn't let her join
She stamped her pretty hooves
And then she hatched a brilliant plan
So cunning, not a gimmick
She found a child about her size
Whom she could wear and mimic
Shadow, Shadow, soft and sweet
Cloven hooves and dancing feet
If they saw beneath your skin
Would they ever let you in?
Shadow, Shadow, dressed in light
Smiling teeth and eyes so bright
If they'd known the things you hide
Surely they'd have run and cried
It worked so well, to her delight
They finally let her play
She laughed and skipped until it ripped
She knew she couldn't stay
Poor Shadow leaked her inky mist
And fled from human sight
And so she ran and hatched a plan
To truly get it right
Oh Shadow, dear Shadow
The children never knew
You wore their smiles like ribbons
So they'd finally love you
Oh Shadow, poor Shadow
Beneath the mask and glow
The ones who learn to mirror best
Are those no one will know
She mastered all their voices now
The ways they smiled and sinned
She'd find new skins and slip right in
Oh how the children grinned
They loved her so, their dear Shadow
She made them all feel seen
They'd never know of horns or glow
To them she was their queen
Shadow, Shadow, soft and sweet
Cloven hooves and dancing feet
If they saw beneath your skin
Would they ever let you in?
Sweet Shadow, poor Shadow
Beneath the mask and glow
The ones who learn to mirror best
Are those no one will know

Immersive, haunting and beautiful.
I think I know Shadow.
