In a very strange coincidence, I have a short story that I wrote on my Substack that takes place in 1520 Ireland 🇮🇪 it's called "The Radiance of the Meadow"
Seeing this a little belatedly yet perhaps when I was meant to find it. I’ve studied Grace O’Malley through the years after my sister-in-law was involved with a dramatic and beautiful Irish production orchestration of her magnificence. I’ll see if it was recorded or filmed and share it with you ahead.
This is such a clever piece of historical storytelling. Rather than simply recounting Grace O'Malley's life, you invite us to experience her legend through the voices of those who feared her most. That choice immediately gives the ballad authenticity and momentum.
The repeating chorus has exactly the quality a traditional sea shanty should have—it lodges itself in the mind after only a few verses. I also appreciated the historical context at the end. It reminds us that behind every enduring legend was a real woman whose courage became larger than history itself.
You have a wonderful gift for weaving scholarship and myth into something that feels timeless.
Loved the note about Grace negotiating with Elizabeth I, whom I adored as a child for being a strong woman in a difficult time. Glad to learn Grace was, as well.
I love this!

A proper shanty ye did make
Not a lie, not a fake
Forget we not,Grace upon the tide
She’s known upon the shores and the oceans wide
