Little doll my mother gave me
Tell me what to do
Little doll my mother gave me
See me safely through
Little doll my mother gave me
Guide me to the flame
Little doll my mother gave me
Help me find the flame
White rider through the sunrise
Red rider through the pine
Black rider through the darkness
Each in turn in line
Oy lyuli, lyuli
Little hut, turn to me
Lyuli moi, lyuli
Turn upon your chicken feet
Oy lyuli, lyuli
Little hut, face me now
Lyuli moi, lyuli
Kneeling on the forest ground
Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga
Iron teeth and leg of bone
Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga
Living in your chicken home
Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga
Flying in your mortar bowl
Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga
Sweeping all your footprints gone
Little doll my mother gave me
Baba gave me many tasks
Little doll my mother gave me
Help me do the things she asks
Little doll my mother gave me
Use your magic as you ought
Little doll my mother gave me
Keep me from the cooking pot
At her fence the skulls were watching
Hollow eyes of fire and bone
Baba watched me through the doorway
Giant in her chicken home
Oy lyuli, lyuli
Little hut, turn to me
Lyuli moi, lyuli
Turn upon your chicken feet
Oy lyuli, lyuli
Little hut, face me now
Lyuli moi, lyuli
Kneeling on the forest ground
Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga
Iron teeth and leg of bone
Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga
Living in your chicken home
Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga
Flying in your mortar bowl
Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga
Sweeping all your footprints gone
Skull lantern in the darkness
Burning white and burning bright
Skull lantern in the darkness
Bringing home the magic light
Little doll my mother gave me
With skull lantern we walk home
Little doll my mother gave me
With its fire it burns them gone
Little doll my mother gave me
Now at last we are alone
Little doll my mother gave me
Now we weave within our home
Oy lyuli, lyuli
Little hut, turn to me
Lyuli, moi lyuli
Turn upon your chicken feet
Oy lyuli, lyuli
Little hut, face me now
Lyuli moi, lyuli
Kneeling on the forest ground
Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga
Iron teeth and leg of bone
Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga
Living in your chicken home
Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga
Flying in your mortar bowl
Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga
Sweeping all your footprints gone
The Tale Behind The Song
Vasilisa the Beautiful (Russian: Василиса Прекрасная) is a Russian fairy tale collected by Alexander Afanasyev in Narodnye russkie skazki.
Vasilisa the Beautiful is one of the most famous Russian fairy tales, preserved in the nineteenth century but rooted in much older Slavic folklore. After her mother’s death, Vasilisa is left with a small magical doll and a final blessing. When her cruel stepmother and jealous stepsisters extinguish the household fire, they send her deep into the forest to seek a new flame from the fearsome witch Baba Yaga, hoping she will never return.
Guided by her mother’s doll, Vasilisa journeys through the dark woods, encounters the mysterious White, Red, and Black Riders, and finally reaches Baba Yaga’s hut standing upon chicken legs. There she survives a series of impossible tasks and earns a skull lantern filled with enchanted fire. When she returns home, the skull’s flame burns her stepmother and stepsisters to ashes, freeing her from their cruelty.
Though often portrayed as a villain, Baba Yaga is a more complex figure in traditional folklore: part witch, part guardian, part teacher. Many scholars interpret the tale as a story of initiation and transformation. At its heart, Vasilisa the Beautiful is a tale about a mother’s blessing enduring beyond death and guiding her daughter safely through the darkness.
